Common Fireplace Problems
1. Chimney Soot or Creosote Build-up
The accumulation of soot or creosote within the fireplace is a frequent source of problems. During typical operation, whether you’re using a wood or gas fireplace, you create carbon monoxide, smoke, water vapor, soot, and sometimes creosote.
2. Water Leaking into Firebox from Flue
Fireplaces are frequently damaged by water due to chimney leaks. A leaking chimney, in fact, might cost hundreds of dollars in damage or induce a water leak within the house.
3. Firebox Damage
Damage to the masonry will occur as you use your fireplace. Typically, you’ll notice cracks, flaking, staining, and so on. If this happens, the heat from your fires may cause the wood and frame surrounding the fireplace to weaken, causing structural harm and even fire.
4. Broken Dampers Need Fixing or Replacement
When not in use, the chimney fireplace damper will act as a “valve” that seals off the firebox flue. Smoke may be trapped inside your home or your heating costs may rise if a damper does not operate properly.
5. Gas Systems Need Regular Maintenance
While gas fireplaces may appear to be a superior choice, they require the same amount of maintenance.
6. Smoke & Cold Air Coming Down Your Chimney
The majority of us have experienced smoke leaking from our fireplaces and cold air coming down our chimneys at one point or another.
